In a social media post, the Minister of Migration and Asylum, Thanos Plevris, commented on a recent incident at Syntagma Square, where a migrant launched a verbal attack and used abusive language against the Evzones Evzonesat the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The minister described the act as one showing total disrespect for the values and principles of the country.
According to the minister, the individual in question had already had his asylum request rejected. A decision dated August 14, 2025, initiated the process of termination and deportation, as he failed to appear to support his application.
At the same time, Mr. Plevris stated that the video footage from the incident at the monument has been added to the individual’s case file.
“There will be zero tolerance for such behavior,” the minister emphasized.
According to reports, the perpetrator claimed to be from Afghanistan, born in 2002, and was seeking asylum on the grounds that he grew up in Iran, where he allegedly faced racist attacks. However, authorities activated the process of implicit rejection of his claim, as he did not show up to defend it.
