European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has confirmed the allegations of the Greek Member of the European Parliament about the atrocities in Syria by the Islamist regime of Al-Jolani.
In a personal letter to the Greek MEP Nikolas Farantouris, the European Commission President admits that the situation has worsened with “violence in Syria’s coastal region, the attacks on the Mar Elias church, which claimed a high number of victims, including many civilians, and the clashes in Sweida.”
At the same time, he underscores that the Commission is now taking into account the concerns raised, which also thanked him for his “engagement and steadfast advocacy for the people in Syria.”
In letters last March to the President of the Commission and in reports to the Plenary, Farantouris had warned of the extremes of the Jolani regime and the need for European and Western intervention.
During his visit to Damascus on 7-9 December 2025, amidst the large-scale massacres of Christians and Alawites, the Greek MEP documented the atrocities of the regime, informing the international community.
Elections and Constitution or reinstatement of sanctions
After a series of meetings in Brussels with representatives of Kurds, Christians, Alawites, Druze and Yazidis, the Greek MEP called in the Plenary Session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg “the reinstatement of strict sanctions” in the event that the Jolani regime’s attacks do not stop and elections are not held immediately with a democratic Constitution and representation of all religious and national communities.
He also called for “an immediate end to the armed attacks” by the forces of the Islamist regime under the leadership of Turkey against the Kurds and other minorities.
